This is probably the question I get asked most often. Coaching is a growing industry and it is evolving to meet people in the challenges of everyday life. Often though, the most prominent messages from 'coaches' are those offering a get rich quick scheme or offering an attractive lifestyle if you 'follow my plan'.
This couldn't be further from the true definition of coaching. Here's a quick guide to coaching.
Coaching is all about the client. It's all about you. What you want to talk about, the answers you find and the action you take.
Coaching is about creating a safe space. Coaches 'hold space' for clients to think deeply and share their deepest feelings. Most coaches offer a discovery call and this is a great way to check out how you feel about the coach. The coach uses the call in the same way. Coaching is partnering and so it's vital to find the right match!
Coaching is about setting goals. What would you like to focus on during the session? What do you want be de different as a result of this conversation? We get clear right at the start of the session and revisit this goal to check we are on track and help you to identify what else needs to be covered.
Coaching is about evoking awareness of the current situation or self. Are you overwhelmed?
What does overwhelmed mean to you? How does it show up in your thoughts, feelings and behaviours? What story are you telling yourself or what beliefs you have assimilated unchallenged? During the session we try to go deeper and tap into some of those unconscious thoughts or feelings so we can look at them, challenge them and decide what to do with them.
Coaching is forward thinking. Once we've gained insight into the here and now we start to explore the possibilities. Where do you want to be? How do you want family meal times to be? What could life feel like if you changed your work hours? Coaching is always looking to take action and move forward.
Coaching is active. Coaching is a way for you to start to think more deeply and process some of the thoughts and feelings you might be experiencing. One of the comments new clients often share is ,"You really make me work for it!" That's true. A coaching session is constructed to help you think deeply and find your own answers. Research indicates that, when you find your own answers you are more likely to follow through and achieve the results you desire.
Coaching is about taking action. At the end of the session you'll be asked, what will you do differently as a result. This will look different for everyone. You might have a clear action plan but you might decide your 'action' is to slow down and take time to process insights from the session.
Coaching is regulated and coaches can align themselves with the ICF ethical standards and code of conduct. I am accredited at ACC level (100+ hours of coaching) and working toward PCC (500 hours of coaching). Coaches are professionals who will be insured, provide you with a contract and will have the appropriate training. Do check!
A coaching session is completely confidential. I agree and comply with the Coaching Code of Conduct and only in extreme circumstances will this confidence be breached. This includes the intent to cause harm to yourself or others or criminal acts.
How do I know if coaching is right for me?
Do you feel that you are not reaching your potential?
Is there a gap between where you are now and where you want to be?
Do you feel stuck and put off making decisions or fail to stick to those decisions you have made?
Are you ready to entertain new and fresh ideas?
Are you willing to be accountable for what you want to achieve?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, then coaching can most definitely support you to take the next step.
What does the coach need from the client during a session?
To ensure your time is well spent with your coach, I would encourage you to come to the session fully prepared and with a goal or intention in mind. Why not try to spend 15 minutes prior to the session taking yourself to a space where you will not be disturbed and can relax. Try to book a session during a part of the day where you won’t feel hurried. Often clients can feel tired or emotional after a coaching session. Try to ensure you have time after the session to take a break. Deep thinking and being vulnerable can be tiring!
Have I piqued your interest? Why not get in touch to book a session?
I would love to hear from you if you have any further questions. Jo@TheEarlyYearsCoach.com
